What can I say about this woman that is not trivial? Haitian adults don’t smile for pictures, but believe me, this woman can laugh. What is the sense of anything if you don’t also enjoy yourself, she once said. She and her husband raised fourteen children on this piece of land. One of the children is buried there. All the rest are living. I asked her how many grandchildren she has. “Oh! So many of them!” She works consistently, steadily all day, every day. Sometimes she gets angry and shouts. She pampers me. I cannot begin to imagine the significant stories that make up her life. Nor could I begin to guess what she carries in her heart. It is such a privilege to be in her home.
