Colors
Colors can really make your site look good, you just need to make sure your not putting Pink and Black together. When your using colors you should pick a good color scheme. A color scheme is a collection of colors which go together or look good with each other. You could have a black and white color scheme. And the scheme can change for the seasons, so if it is in December you would want Red and Green. In the summer you would want Orange, Yellow and White colors. Or it can have something to do with your site content.
Images
Although you don't want to have to many, Images can really liven up your site. One here and One there will really make viewers feel at home. You might also want some animated Gifs, it is quite easy to lose track of how many you have on especially when your working with animated images. The images colors should also be in the same scheme as the site. Remember not to use to many or they will get quite annoying, and it also takes longer for the viewers to download, which then they will just leave and you won't get very many hits.
