Created by Pam Rosenman : When Aviva suggested that interested Jewish community members make a quilt for our community I was anxious to join. After all of these years we now have something Jewish to decorate our services and celebrations. I love the sense of belonging it will create. Mezuzah and Home. The mezuzah (a case which holds the special prayer of the "Shema") is an important symbol of Jewish life. In every place that my family has lived we had them not only on the outside doors of our home, but the inside doors as well. So I chose to make this block. It brought to me the feeling of home that is so central to Jewish families. Inspiration came from a photo of another quilt. I adapted a house block that I once made in a quilting class and applied the mezuzah using different stitches and threads. The flower pot fabric, sunflower and watering can represent my love of gardening. And every house needs a cat! |
Created by Aviva Suchow: The Kohanim Blessing. This is a special blessing given for the community. An original block -- I used my husband’s hands for the outline template. I embroidered the hands with a design from a Jewish textile book. My husband, David, was very kind to help us in many ways for this quilt. I appreciate his participation in sharing and helping so much.
