How
to Prepare Plain Rice
If directions are not available for cooking the
product, use the following methods:
Stove Top:
Combine one cup of rice, water (see table), one teaspoon
salt (optional) and one tablespoon butter or margarine
(optional) in 2-3 quart saucepan. Bring to a boil; stir
once or twice. Reduce heat , cover and simmer. Cook
according to time specified on table below. If rice is
not tender or water is not absorbed, replace and cook 2-4
minutes longer. Fluff with fork.
Microwave Oven Directions:
Combine one cup of rice, water (see table), one teaspoon
salt (optional) and one tablespoon butter or margarine
(optional) in 2-3 quart microwavable baking dish. Cover
and cook on HIGH for five minutes or until boiling.
Reduce setting to MEDIUM (50% power) and cook for 15
minutes. Fluff with fork.
Conventional Oven:
Cooking rice in an oven with other foods is an efficient
way of saving energy. Combine rice, water (see table),
one teaspoon salt (optional) and one tablespoon butter or
margarine (optional) in a baking dish. Cover tightly ad
bake at 350°F FOR 25-30 MINUTES. (30-40 minutes for
parboiled rice; one hour for brown rice). Fluff with
fork.
Rice cookers:
When using a rice cooker follow manufacturer's
instructions. In general rice is cooked using 1/4-1/2 cup
less water than stove top method.
Reheating Rice:
For a cup of leftover rice, add two table spoons of
butter. Cover and heat 4-5 minutes on stove top or oven.
In microwave cook on HIGH for 1-2 minutes per cup of
cooked rice.
