Modern scholars seem to agree there are five knows continents upon the face of Meroln, although many dispute the frigid lands of Frathelond's claim, arguing that a large chunk of floating ice cannot be a true continent. Thonoria, however spans many thousand miles from north to south upon the globe and, for the most part, is less than a thousand miles from east to west.

Thonoria's past was both colorful and violent, seeing endless cylces of settlement by various peoples, invasions, spread of vast cultures and then destruction at the hands of the next invaders. Much of Thonoria's history is, thus, a mottled patchwork of small nations, city-states and entire cultures battling for supremacy and conquered lands. It was only with the Sasserine invasion, 1700 years ago, that modern Thonorian history began. The Sasserine, a race of sturdy human stock, sailed in from distant lands and began not only conquering existing countries within Thonoria, but the Sasserine also began recording their history.

While Sasserine blood still runs through the veins of many humans living in Thonoria to this very day, the Sasserine themselves have been assimilated accross all borders and nations and no longer rule any lands as a single people. Scholars, however, mark the beginning of the modern era with the ascention of the Dulkan's. In particular, Espirath Con Dulkan I, first emporer of Thonoria who was the first ruler to unite the entire continent under one rule. The Dulkan's have ruled Thonoria successfully for the past 600 years. The only exception would be the secession of Iguanna Shores in FY 247. The contentious city-state on the western shores of Thonoria has remained an independent entity for past 350 years with the Empire mysteriously allowing the city to remain independent, if not isolated.
