I took three of the girls for a walk last night (Revel, Zanoza, Mir). It was about 6:30 when we started. We walked down the farm road that we use, it is only used by the farmer, so there is very little traffic. The girls were having a good time running around and playing in the creek. Revel jumped out of the creek at one point and fell. She hurt her front a little but it did not seem bad. As we came to the turn around point a coyote came out of the creek about 400 yards ahead. The coyote started across the pea field and Revel was gone in a flash. Mir went out about 50 yards and stopped and Zanoza didn't go at all. I know that Revel can run down a coyote in a big hurry. So I started to run after her because I thought she would need help when she caught it. I only ran a little ways. Then I stopped to watch. Revel is awesome and sometimes I can not help but to stand there and watch with my mouth open. So that is what I did as she ran down the coyote. At about a ¼ mile she caught the coyote. They were going up a hill at the time and she closed about 4 feet with every stride. When she hit the coyote she was going so fast that the coyote rolled twice. By the time the coyote had regained its feet it was only able to go about 50 feet before Revel knocked it down again. This time when it got up it made about 15 feet before being knocked down again. When it got up again Revel was all over it, pushing it from the side and grabbing at its neck as they disappeared over the hill.

At this point I took off running again, with the two other girls behind me. I'm running through this pea field looking for Revel. The peas are only 8 inches high, so I can see fine except for the hills. After running to the base of the hill I look over and see Revel coming back in the next field over. She must have run a good half mile. No sign of the coyote. It was still about 65 degrees so I worried about the heat a little. When Revel got back to me I checked her over for cuts and bites but she was fine. So we headed back toward the creek so she could have some water. I petted her up and told her how good she was and I told the other two how useless they were. If even one of them had gone with Revel we would have had a dead coyote.

As we walked back along the creek I looked up and saw a deer in the wheat field up the hill. The dogs did not see the deer because the grass along the creek is about 4 feet tall. As we came to a crossing of the creek the girls did see the deer. But the deer did not run so they just watched it as it walk down the hill towards us. It kept coming closer and closer. I could see now that it was a large whitetail buck. It came to within about 50 yards of me and the girls started to head for the deer. The deer just stood there. The wheat is about 2 feet tall so the girls were bounding up and down through it. This time all three girls went. As Zanoza came within 30 feet of the deer it finally turned and started to run with all three girls behind. The tall wheat slowed the Borzoi more than the deer. They were all near the top of a hill and soon were gone over the top. Revel came back in a very short time. She had just run the coyote and her front seemed to be sore. Again I started to run up hill. As I topped the hill I did not see the other two girls but just then Mir came back over the top of the next hill. Still no Zanoza. I headed to the top of the next hill and still no Zanoza. I stood at the top and looked around and called her. None of these girls are big and one could not handle a large deer. But just then I saw her coming over the farthest hill. As she came closer I could hear her breathing. She had been gone about 3 minutes and was very tired. Again I checked the dog over to make sure she had not been kicked. Everything was fine. So we headed back through the wheat to the creek for a drink.

After reaching the creek we started down the road back to the car and home. The Borzoi girls were very happy as was I. I felt a lot better about the two girls that didn't run the coyote. They did so well on the deer and as happens every time I take Revel out she impressed me again. It was a fun walk with Borzoi.
